I recently completed a DIY dollhouse for my daughter, Scarlett. She adores it just as much as I do and has taken really good care of all the tiny pieces! I think she is so gentle with it because she saw me working on it for so long and knew it was something really special.
Paint
For painting materials I used acrylic craft paint from Hobby Lobby. I tested a few colors before I began and it was really hard for me to pick my favorite shade of pink. In the end these two colors took the prize. Find them HERE and HERE.
I linked all the colors I used + my other favorite shade of pink at the bottom of this post
This dollhouse is from IKEA and is sold in a natural shade of wood. ( If you take a look at the floors, that’s how the house came.) I wanted to paint the walls and exterior, and just like a life size house, I used painters tape! This turned out to be very handy to keep the paint away from the floors! I wanted to have a clean line and this allowed me to paint freely without worry.
For the patterned doll house walls I used leftover removable wallpaper from Scarlett’s bedroom. If you haven’t heard of this type of wallpaper, its similar to a big sticker! It easily peels away from the backing and you push it onto the wall. The best part is when you take it down there is no damage to your wall!
Let’s Decorate
I found on Etsy some of the wall decor and a few of the extra accessories. I will link everything I can at the bottom of this post for you to easily find it all!
Before this DIY project, I didn’t realize a mini home decor market even existed! LOL There is a ton of accessories online to pick from and it took me forever to narrow down my favorites!
For the main living furniture I found a set that was on CLEARANCE! I mean, how perfect is that?! It was so cute, matched my vision perfectly, AND was on sale?! SCORE! Total mom win in my book! I customized a few pieces by painting them turquoise to match the chimney and wall accent. They were originally a pretty shade of green, but I wanted them to look cohesive with the rest of the house.
What I Would Do Differently
- I would recommend painting the dollhouse BEFORE you assemble!
- The white walls took me so many layers of paint! I lost track how many times I had to apply it! The natural wood soaked up the paint right up. I would consider using a paint primer before applying or even using something other than acrylic paint.
